Maal Hijrah, or more popularly known as Awal Muharram is an important day for the Muslim faith with two events of importance which happened. This was the day in which Nabi Muhammad S.A.W migrated from Mekkah to Madinah in the year 622 A.D. This is also the day in which all mosques hold ‘solat sunat’, a form of special prayer. Awal Muharram falls on the first day of the Muslim calendar and is the New Year for all Muslims. It is celebrated in Malaysia as a public holiday.
